Hi friends! I realize I’m a bit behind with this post, as most bloggers have already posted their 2017 wrap-ups and favorites list. But I was frantically trying to reach my Goodreads goal literally up until the last 20 minutes of the year (I had to read one and a half books on December 31st in order to reach my goal—I don’t recommend this lifestyle kids, it took some real effort, LOL). Good news is I reached it! But I waited until I was 100% done with all my 2017 reads before I made a wrap-up (coming very soon!) or end-of-the-year list, just in case one of those last-minute reads became a favorite (spoiler alert: none of them did).
But I had the pleasure of reading some really amazing books in 2017! I’d say, in terms of quality, it was one of my best years yet! I chose not to do a set number of favorite books on my list (top 10, 5, etc.), just because I’d rather feature all the books that really deserve it! Don’t worry, it’s still a fairly short list.
The books are not in a particular order, as it’s hard enough to just pick my favorites, much less figure out which I liked the most out of those! Click on the book’s image to see its Goodreads page.
1. Song of the Current
Okay, I just have to say it: EVERYONE SLEEPS ON THIS BOOK AND IT IS NOT COOL BECAUSE THIS BOOK DESERVES ALL THE PRAISE! Seriously. Song of the Current may have been the *best* book I read all year and I never see anyone talk about it. It’s the ideal YA fantasy!! A girl of color as the main character, unique fantasy world with lots of cool ships and mythology, cute family dynamic, and a love interest who is genuine and learns from his mistakes! If you take one thing away from this post, just READ SONG OF THE CURRENT! And come shout about it to the world with me!
2. Strange the Dreamer
This book has been popping up on a lot of 2017 favorites lists, and I’m not surprised in the slightest! Laini Taylor has such a talent for writing, her sentences flow together like music. I once saw her describe Strange the Dreamer as a love letter to fantasy readers everywhere, and I think that’s the perfect description! The city of Weep is gorgeous and creepy and unlike anything I’ve ever read before. Lazlo is also so freaking adorable! AND THAT ENDING!! I don’t know how I’ll survive until Muse of Nightmares is released!
3. Simon VS the Homo Sapiens Agenda / Upside of Unrequited
Yes, I know I’m cheating by combining multiple books, but this past year I recently discovered the amazing person that is Becky Albertalli, and had to include both her books! I’d had Simon on my TBR for ages, and finally picked it up when discussion around the movie began. Suffice it to say, Becky is now my favorite contemporary author! I could relate to Simon and Molly’s stories so much. I can’t wait to read Leah’s once it releases!
Another book that this community sleeps on!! When I started Nyxia, I really had no clue what I was going into, and it ended up being one of the most heartfelt, adventurous stories I’ve ever read. This book has such diverse, well-developed characters that I fell completely in love with. Not to mention, Nyxia has insane plot twists! And an ending that nearly crushed my soul!! Where is the sequel, because the only place it belongs is in my hands.
6. Gray Wolf Island
My heart squeezes every time I think of this book, because I just adore these characters and I’m in love with Elliot Thorne and the ending KILLED ME and I don’t think we’re getting a sequel. *cries for an eternity* I have had a craving for treasure-hunting stories ever since I read this book, it was so much fun! The adventurous gang of peculiar characters completely captured my soul, as you can probably tell, and I’m gonna be talking about this book for a long time.
7. Wonder Woman: Warbringer
It wouldn’t be a favorites list from me if it didn’t include a Leigh Bardugo book! I’d been anticipating the release of Wonder Woman ever since it was announced in 2016, and as always, Leigh did not disappoint! This probably had the best actions scenes I’ve read in my life. And Diana’s friends are all so fun and their dialogue is perfect,
if this doesn’t win the Epic Reads award for Best Book Squad I’m gonna be pissed! Honestly I’m running out of ways to say that all these books are amazing, but ALL THESE BOOKS ARE AMAZING SO READ THEM.
I don’t think I could personally count them as “favorites,” but these two lovelies still need some recognition! THUG is likely the most influential book of 2017, and is honestly just a beautiful story, so I had to include it somewhere in this post! If you haven’t already read this, make it a priority!!
And then of course, my lovely Grisha fairytale book that I absolutely adore! Because it’s a book of short stories, I couldn’t connect with it quite the same way as a full novel, but anything set in the Grishaverse is very, very special to me. And I mean, these stories are just awesome. Leigh is a mastermind, enough said.
