Hi friends, Happy New Year! I couldn’t be more excited to celebrate the start of 2018 than by participating on my first Rock Star Tour, for a book I absolutely adored no less!
Today I’m sharing my thoughts on this action-packed, “batty” novel by the queen of high-tech stories, Marie Lu! There is also a giveaway for three finished copies of Batman: Nightwalker later on in the post!
Author: Marie Lu
Series: DC Icons #2
Genre: YA, Action, Superheroes
Pub. Date: Jan. 2, 2018
Synopsis: Before he was Batman, he was Bruce Wayne. A reckless boy willing to break the rules for a girl who may be his worst enemy.
The Nightwalkers are terrorizing Gotham City, and Bruce Wayne is next on their list.
One by one, the city’s elites are being executed as their mansions’ security systems turn against them, trapping them like prey. Meanwhile, Bruce is turning eighteen and about to inherit his family’s fortune, not to mention the keys to Wayne Enterprises and all the tech gadgetry his heart could ever desire. But after a run-in with the police, he’s forced to do community service at Arkham Asylum, the infamous prison that holds the city’s most brutal criminals.
Madeleine Wallace is a brilliant killer . . . and Bruce’s only hope.
In Arkham, Bruce meets Madeleine, a brilliant girl with ties to the Nightwalkers. What is she hiding? And why will she speak only to Bruce? Madeleine is the mystery Bruce must unravel. But is he getting her to divulge her secrets, or is he feeding her the information she needs to bring Gotham City to its knees? Bruce will walk the dark line between trust and betrayal as the Nightwalkers circle closer.
Although I haven’t read any DC comics, and I’ve only watched maybe five minutes of a Batman movie, I found it so easy to fall in love with Bruce Wayne’s story. One of my favorite things about the DC Icons series is that it’s not only perfect for extreme superhero nerds, but also for those of us who are just getting into the DC universe!
I have to admit, after reading Wonder Woman by my favorite author (Queen Leigh), I was afraid that Batman wouldn’t be able to compete. But I was definitely proven wrong, and never should’ve doubted Marie! Nightwalker is an amazing companion to Warbringer, it even felt similar in story structure and overall writing style. I have no idea whether the two authors ever collaborated on these books, but it sure felt like they did!
As you might expect from a superhero novel, especially one about Batman, this book is ACTION. PACKED. There’s an epic chase scene on the freeway, a prison break, and so much more that I won’t spoil for you. Marie Lu really has a gift for writing fight scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat, and in this book, it just felt like one right after another.
In a similar vein as the action, Nightwalker is filled with all kinds of cool gadgetry. We get artificial intelligence, talking cars, and impenetrable body suits. Whatever tech you can dream up, this book probably has it.
At the heart of the story, however, is Bruce’s relationship with a mysterious—and extremely dangerous—girl named Madeleine, who he meets rather quickly during his community service at Arkham Asylum. Madeleine is such an intriguing character, I really had no idea up until the last page whether she could be trusted. Let’s just say that in addition to action, Marie has a serious knack for plot twists.
Much of this book reads like a crime thriller, which I loved! A lot of time is spent uncovering police files, and digging up clues to an old mystery that’s tied to Bruce and his fight against the Nightwalkers. There’s gruesome murder and hidden secrets, all twisted together for a wild explosion of tensions at the end.
Bruce’s character is just as you’d expect a young Batman to be: endearing and kind, conflicted and confused, selfless to a fault. His development over the course of the book is excellently done, but I love how the DC Icons series purposely leaves our heroes as kids, just on the brink of assuming the identities we all know they will later take on.
I truly loved everything about this book, my only complaint is that there could’ve been more development for the side characters. I need more Alfred in my life!!
